Access to Health Care

New York's low-income residents have historically struggled to obtain quality health care services. For those who face additional barriers to service, such as language or disability, ensuring access to preventative care, specialists and treatment has been particularly difficult. NYLPI's Access to Health Care Program strives to improve access for New York's most vulnerable populations.

The Access to Health Care Program utilizes NYLPI's innovative community-focused approach to advocacy. The Program's organizers and lawyers work with community groups to remedy systemic barriers to health care access through administrative enforcement of civil rights laws, litigation and other forms of advocacy.

NYLPI's work in this area dates back to the late 1970s, when NYLPI joined with community groups struggling to save the public health system during New York City's fiscal crisis. Current efforts include a number of campaigns to prevent hospital closures in medically under-served communities across New York City, as well as advocacy on behalf of people who are limited-English proficient and racial and ethnic minorities who experience discrimination in the health care system.

Sign on in support of our campaign to end insurance- and race-based discrimination in outpatient health settings! Click here for more information.
