Naturalization Clinic Provides Pro Bono Legal Services to 20 Green Card HoldersSeptember 25, 2019
Today, 20 green card holders received free legal assistance as they pursue American citizenship. Hosted at Catholic Migration Services in Brooklyn, attorneys and other trained volunteers met individually with pre-screened legal permanent residents to walk them through their naturalization applications and answer questions. Both English- and Spanish- speaking volunteers were present.
Despite increasing demand for citizenship under the current administration, legal services to support the naturalization process are often out of reach for immigrant communities. The naturalization clinic will help green card holders through this complex and often confusing process.
Over the last five years, the partnership has hosted 19 workshops staffed by over 400 pro bono attorneys from four law firms and five corporate legal clients. In total, the series of workshops has helped serve 787 clients as they pursue citizenship. Additionally, Cleary Gottlieb has operated a hotline for questions related to naturalization, and has screened over 700 calls within the last year.
