NYLPI Community Organizer for Health Justice Mia Soto attended a congressional town hall event on immigration this weekend in Corona, Queens, along with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Discussion at the event focused on recent upticks in immigration raids, conditions in camps on the Southern Border of the United States, and how to mobilize and educate the community here in New York around immigration issues.

Ms. Cortez also focused on her legislative policies, particularly her lead role in preventing a citizenship question being included in the 2020 census. There was a lot of media coverage of the event, including by New York One and the Huffington Post.

“The event truly demonstrated the power of effective community organizing and advocacy at all levels,” Mia said. “As a Mexican immigrant woman and a member of the most diverse communities in New York, I applaud the work and dedication of Ms. Cortez in advocating for the safety and livelihood of all New Yorkers, regardless of their immigrant status. Thanks to the efforts of our partner organizations, the extensive know-your-rights education and outreach, our communities knew exactly how to prepare and protect themselves from the imminent raids last weekend. Neighborhoods such as Corona, Jackson Heights and Elmhurst are some of the most diverse in the world and we want to keep them like that. Immigrants are the propellers of this country, immigrants are what makes America the greatest.”

The event was also attended by a host of immigrant justice community groups including African Communities Together; Drum; Make The Road New York and Asian Americans for equality.
