NYLPI has filed a declaration in a Federal Court class action lawsuit challenging months-long ICE detention before first court appearance.

The case centers on challenging months long ICE detention before an individual is able to be seen by an immigration judge, leadings to longer times in immigration detention.

NYLPI’s declaration, based on our work addressing access to healthcare in immigration detention for the last three years, supports the argument that immigration detention is bad for one’s health and causes great harm, and even death. Here are press releases on the lawsuit by our allies at the Bronx Defenders and NYCLU.

NYLPI’s medical providers’ network helps people in immigration detention by connecting them with a volunteer network of doctors like Dr. Joseph Shin, whom NYLPI recently honored at our Felix A. Fishman Awards lunch. You can find out more about it, and read our report, Detained and Denied: Healthcare Access in Immigration Detention, here.

NYLPI outlined the deplorable conditions in immigration detention seen through our work in the declaration, written by NYLPI’s Director of Health Justice, Laura F. Redman, in support of a Plaintiffs’ Motion for Preliminary Injunction filed by Bronx Defenders, The New York Civil Liberties Union, and the Cardozo Immigrant Rights Clinic.
