NYLPI Hosts Sunset Park COVID-19 Town Halls & Launches Story Collection ProjectOctober 8, 2020
The September 30th and October 1st, 2020 events were streamed live on Facebook with Spanish and Mandarin interpretation. They offered the local community an opportunity to hear updates on local school reopening and testing efforts directly from representatives from the Department of Education and Test and Trace Corp. Importantly, the Town Halls also gave the local community a public forum to engage directly with city officials on issues of great concern. The sessions collectively have been seen by over 350 people.
The Town Halls also served as the launch space for the Sunset Park COVID19 Story Collection Project, a collective effort between NYLPI, AMPHS, and the Center for Family life to record the experiences of the community during this public health crisis. The project grew organically as a response to the negative media attention that followed the summer case surge, while few have examined the barriers local residents faced in accessing information and resources. The Sunset Park COVID19 Story Collection Project aims to amplify the voices of community members who have been directly impacted by COVID19 and continue to provide a feedback mechanism for public policy efforts.
