NYLPI Speaks on “A Sustainable Vision for Rikers Island” Panel

On Thursday, September 24, 2020, Senior Staff Attorney Melissa Iachan participated in the first panel of a two-day event, “A Sustainable Vision for Rikers Island,” held in honor of Climate Week and World Water Day. Melissa spoke on the importance ensuring restorative and environmental justice as the core principles for any future plan to utilize the Island known for its legacy of punishment, torture, and toxicity. In particular, Melissa shared the specific details about the vision being advocated for by the Renewable Rikers coalition, and the policies in the Renewable Rikers Act.
