NYLPI Urges MTA and City Council to Invoke “Citywide Easement Certification”
May 4, 2020Access-a-Ride Reform Group, Disability Justice, Legislative, News, Press Release
NYLPI joined numerous transit and disability rights advocates urging the MTA and City Council to invoke zoning tools which will result in increasing the number of ADA-accessible subway stations throughout the city. “Citywide Easement Certification” will mandate that developers who build next to subway stations provide permanent access to a small piece of their property to enable the MTA to build a new, accessible station entrance. The “Expanded Transit Bonus” will offer a floor area bonus in exchange for installing accessible station entrances that are near, but not necessarily adjacent to, the developers’ new construction. The MTA will continue to be obligated to construct and properly maintain accessible station entrances.
