NYLPI Provides Testimony Urging NYC to Reform Emergency Response to Mental Health Crises

NYLPI’s Director of Disability Justice Ruth Lowenkron provided testimony to the City Council’s Public Safety Committee on June 9, 2020, urging New York City to reform its system for responding to individuals who experience mental health crises by eliminating the police and substituting health care professionals and trained “peers” – those with lived mental health experience. NYLPI urged the Council to immediately adopt the proposal to that end prepared by Correct Crisis Intervention Today – NYC, of which NYLPI is a member.
